V/A – Mister Comp 3Produced and recorded by Max Lord at Wire Sounds, South Boston
Sometimes the best compilations are the hardest to define. Should a benefit comp be judged by the quality of its character or strictly by the merits of the musical product contained within? The answers to these philosophical conundrums are quickly laid to rest with the third installment of the Mister Comp series, which doubles as a benefit for the Kristen Malone fund that supports Mass Art students. But music to warm the heart and soul this is not. Though the ungodly sounds range from a kamikaze cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Life Partners to the Big Digits’ Beastie Boys-esque duel over samples seemingly culled from a cosmonauts trash bin, these songs all share a similar teeth-against-concrete sense of subtlety and catharsis. This disc nearly shows complete disregard for western modes and harmonic structures.
All tracks are exclusive to this comp, as it was a year long project with producer Max Lord twiddling knobs as each band squeezed into the studio for a weekend to record. The production could have offered a bit more defining clarity, sounding just a few notches above being recorded in a basement. This also gives the proceedings a unique and almost — but better than — live feel, which if turned up to diarrhea-inducingly loud, would sound like the best one song per band basement show that never happened. Big Bear, U.V. Protection, Ho Ag, Devil Music, Neptune, and then some, all play their horribly misunderstood hearts out. The Napkins manage to squeeze blood out of a stone and inject some summer breeze melodies over their jittery guitar jangle that occasionally delves into jackhammer solos. To summarize in one hyperbolic sentence: this is the soundtrack to Boston’s back alley birth of post-hardcore’s ugly and deformed two-headed stepchild. Needless to say, it’s the best damn thing to happen in a long time. -DenezMcAdoo

from BIg, rEd and Shiny :KIRSTEN MALONE REMEMBERED
by BIG RED Kirsten A. Malone : Retrospective, a three-day exhibition, will be the first retrospective of Kirsten Malone's strong work since her untimely death in 2004 at the age of 29. With this body of photography, video, sculpture, and performance, Malone introspectively integrates her own experiences with acute commentary on the social constructs affecting her life as a young woman in Boston. Employing her characteristic intelligence and sharp wit, personal histories become pertinent social critique of stereotypes, consumption, and technology. In her own words, she set to "question the pursuit of happiness." The centerpiece of this show will include an installation of Malone's Love Resume Project: a prolific multimedia campaign which managed to explore contemporary social constructs of courtship, consumerism, and identity at the same time as "efficiently streamlining (her) lovelife." This exhibit was curated by a group of Kirsten Malone’s friends, with the support of her family and estate. Drawing from her surviving original works, this show will feature selections from Kirsten’s entire career with video, photography and, installation. Much of this work in this exhibit will be on public view for the first time. The Copley Society is generously donating its space for this show. A magnetic member of the arts and music communities, Malone received BA in photo journalism from Boston University and a BA in photography from the Massachusetts College of Art. Weeks before her death, Malone was accepted to the Art Institute of Chicago's graduate student program which she was set to attend this September. The work at the Copley Society will be for sale, and the profits will benefit a Mass College of Art Scholarship fund for innovative young women artists. Further events to raise money to endow the fund, including art auctions and a memorial bike ride, are forthcoming.
